The Experience

The first thing I noticed in Balat was the paint—peeling in places, bright in others, like someone had tried to cheer up a rainy morning. We squeezed down narrow lanes past laundry flapping above our heads. Our guide, Emre, waved us over to St. Stephen’s Iron Church—he grinned and said it’s the only one made entirely from cast iron. I touched the gate; it felt cold even though the sun was out. Inside, incense hung in the air and an old woman nodded at us but didn’t speak. There was something quiet about that moment I can’t quite explain.

We wandered past houses with crooked steps and kids playing soccer with a half-flat ball (one of them shouted “hello!” and then ran off giggling). Emre pointed out St. George Church and told us about the piece of the cross inside—I honestly didn’t expect to see something like that here. After poking around Balat for a while (and getting lost once), we had some time to just sit on a painted stair and watch people going about their day. The call to prayer drifted over from somewhere nearby—soft but insistent.

Then came the boat ride across the Bosphorus Strait. The water looked almost green in places, choppy with little whitecaps. We passed under those huge bridges linking Europe and Asia; I kept thinking how Istanbul never really lets you forget where you are—right between worlds. Someone on deck was eating simit and offered me a bite (chewy, nutty, still warm). The city skyline slid by—palaces, minarets, glass towers all jumbled together.

The afternoon was for Sultanahmet: Blue Mosque first (I fumbled with my scarf at the entrance; an older lady helped me tie it properly). The blue tiles really do glow when sunlight hits them just right—it’s not hype. And then Hagia Sophia: gold mosaics peeking through centuries of paint and plaster, tourists whispering in every language you can imagine. It’s hard to describe how small you feel standing there under that dome. I still think about that silence when everyone looked up at once.
