The Experience

The day starts with hotel pickup at 9:45 am and heads straight to Devrent Valley, also called Imagination Valley—a landscape so otherworldly that the rock formations themselves look sculpted by hand. From there you move to Pasabagi, the Monks Valley, where three-headed fairy chimneys rise from the ground and you can see every stage of how these formations actually develop. The guide walks you through the geology while pointing out the hermit cells carved into the rock, where Christian monks chose to live starting in the 3rd century.

Next is Avanos, a pottery village on the banks of the Kizilirmak River—the Red River, named for the clay it carries. You watch potters work the kick wheels, the same technique they've used for generations, shaping clay by foot while their hands form the vessel. Lunch happens in a local restaurant before the tour moves to the Goreme Open Air Museum, where the real weight of the day settles in. The Byzantine cave churches here hold some of the world's most important religious art: frescoes and wall paintings from the Iconoclastic period through the end of Seljuk rule, with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, Church Fathers and saints painted across the cave walls. These are not replicas or reconstructions—they are the actual paintings monks created in these caves over a thousand years ago.

The final stop is Esentepe, a panoramic viewpoint that shows the complete Goreme valley: the fairy chimneys, the rock formations, the cave houses carved into the cliffs, and Uchisar Castle rising as the highest point in the region. After this, the driver returns you to your hotel. The whole day runs about eight hours, and the group never exceeds 15 people.
