The Experience

The drive from Istanbul to Eceabat takes five hours along the Sea of Marmara coast, with a 30-minute break for refreshments halfway through. Lunch is provided around noon on day one (a vegetarian option is available if you request it). You arrive at the Gallipoli Peninsula in the afternoon and spend the remaining daylight exploring the ANZAC battlefields and war memorials—Brighton Beach, Arıburnu Cemetery, Lone Pine, Johnston's Jolly, the original trenches, The Nek and Chunuk Bair. Your guide walks you through what happened in 1915 and why these sites matter to Australian and New Zealand military history. That night you stay at a three-star hotel in Canakkale, a seaside town on the strait.

Day two starts with a short 30-minute drive to Troy. You visit the Museum of Troy first, where the guide explains the artifacts and the layers of history they represent. The afternoon is spent at the archaeological site itself—nine different cities built one atop the other over thousands of years, each one a settlement, each one buried and built over again. You stand in front of the remains, the ancient sacrificial altars, and the guide separates the myths from what archaeologists have actually found. By late afternoon you drive back to Istanbul and are dropped at your hotel.

The tour includes entrance fees to both the museum and the Troy site, ferry fees to cross the strait, the air-conditioned vehicle for the entire journey, and your guide throughout. Pickup is from your Istanbul hotel (European side only). Children can travel in a pram or stroller, and infants can sit on an adult's lap. The exact timing depends on traffic and time of day, but the structure holds: five hours to Gallipoli, an afternoon of walking the battlefields, a night in Canakkale, then the museum and the site on day two before the return drive.
