The experience

The tour starts at your hotel in Çanakkale around 11:30am, where you're picked up and taken to the ferry terminal for the crossing to Eceabat on the far shore of the Dardanelles. After lunch at a local restaurant, a 15-minute coach ride takes you inland to ANZAC Cove on the Aegean coast: the beach where Australian and New Zealand troops landed on April 25, 1915. Your guide walks you through the events of that first day and the campaign that followed, standing above the cove itself and visiting the grave of John Simpson Kirkpatrick, the stretcher bearer known as the Man with the Donkey for carrying wounded soldiers on a stolen animal to a medical post.

From the beaches, the tour moves uphill along what became known as Second Ridge, where the Allied advance stopped on the first day and where the front line stayed for the next seven months. You drive along the ridge top with the old trenches still visible on either side, stopping at several cemeteries and memorials. At Lone Pine, the Australian memorial commemorates almost 5,000 Australians who have no known grave. At Johnston's Jolly, you walk through the abandoned trenches and tunnel entrances themselves. The final stop is Chunuk Bair, one of the peninsula's highest points and site of the New Zealand national memorial: captured by New Zealand troops in August and held for two days before Ottoman forces under Mustafa Kemal recaptured it. The names of more than 850 New Zealand soldiers who fell in the area are on the memorial.

After the tour ends, the bus returns to Eceabat. You can either take the ferry back to Çanakkale or board a coach for the five-hour trip to Istanbul if you prefer. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and vegetarian lunch options are available on request.
