The Experience

I didn’t expect the road up to the House of the Virgin Mary to feel so green — almost like we’d left Turkey for a minute and ended up somewhere softer, quieter. Our guide, Ayşe, pointed out wild herbs growing along the path (she crushed one in her hand and let us smell it — sharp, almost lemony). The air was cooler than down in Ephesus, and I caught myself just listening to birds for a second while everyone else took photos. It’s funny how silence can feel so full sometimes.

The shrine itself is small, stone, and honestly not what I pictured. There were candles flickering inside and a few people whispering prayers in different languages. I’m not religious but there was something about that space — maybe just knowing how many people have come here hoping for comfort or answers. Ayşe told us stories about Mary’s last days here; she spoke quietly, like she didn’t want to break the mood. I tried to repeat “Meryem Ana Evi” after her and totally mangled it — she laughed and corrected me gently.

Afterwards we wandered outside where locals tie ribbons and notes to a wall for wishes. Some were scraps of fabric, some just napkins scribbled with pen. The sun came out right then and everything felt warmer. We piled back into the van (air-conditioning was a relief) and headed down toward Ephesus again, but that hush from Mary’s house kind of stuck with me all afternoon.
