The experience

We rolled out from Kusadasi port just after sunrise. I remember the salty air and the way our driver grinned when he held up my name on a little sign. The Ephesus Terrace Houses were a surprise for me: all those mosaics and painted walls still holding onto their colors after centuries. There are a lot of steps (my knees complained), but seeing how wealthy families lived back then was worth every one. At one point, a local restorer waved us over just to show off a tiny tile he’d just cleaned. His hands were stained blue from pigment dust. We finished at the Temple of Artemis, or what’s left of it anyway, mostly columns standing alone in a field now, but you can kind of feel how massive it must’ve been.

Driving back along the shoreline toward Kusadasi Marina, I caught myself staring out at the sea thinking about all those layers of history stacked up here, not just ruins but people who laughed or argued or got lost on these same stones. It sticks with you more than you expect.
