The Experience

We rolled out from Kusadasi port just after sunrise — I remember the salty air and the way our driver grinned when he held up my name on a little sign. Our guide, Selin, was already chatting with someone in German (she speaks four languages?!) but switched to English as we climbed into the van. The drive up into the hills felt quiet and cool; I kept noticing olive trees flashing past. First stop: the House of the Virgin Mary. It’s tucked away in these piney mountains about 15 minutes from town. There’s a hush there that’s hard to describe — even with other visitors around, it felt like everyone was whispering on instinct. The air smelled faintly of incense and something herbal I couldn’t quite place.

After that we headed straight to Ephesus itself — honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so huge. You step onto these ancient marble streets and suddenly you’re dodging cats sunning themselves near columns older than most countries. Selin pointed out carvings on the Library of Celsus (I tried to imagine what it looked like full of scrolls) and she told us little stories about Roman daily life that made me laugh more than once. I think my favorite bit was when she explained how they heated their public baths — apparently it involved an army of slaves stoking fires underground. Wild.

The Ephesus Terrace Houses were a surprise for me — all those mosaics and painted walls still holding onto their colors after centuries. There are a lot of steps (my knees complained), but seeing how wealthy families lived back then was worth every one. At one point, a local restorer waved us over just to show off a tiny tile he’d just cleaned; his hands were stained blue from pigment dust. We finished at the Temple of Artemis — or what’s left of it anyway, mostly columns standing alone in a field now, but you can kind of feel how massive it must’ve been.

Driving back along the shoreline toward Kusadasi Marina, I caught myself staring out at the sea thinking about all those layers of history stacked up here — not just ruins but people who laughed or argued or got lost on these same stones. It sticks with you more than you expect.
