The experience

There’s this moment at Uchisar Castle where the wind whips around you and the whole of Cappadocia just stretches out: like a faded map, but alive. Our guide, Emre, pointed out old pigeon houses carved into the stone (I’d never have noticed), and I caught that faint chalky smell mixed with wild herbs. The sun was still low, so everything looked softer than I expected: almost like a painting. I tried to take a photo but honestly, it didn’t come close.

We wandered through Monks Valley next. Those fairy chimneys look even stranger up close: some with three “hats” balanced on top. Emre explained how they formed layer by layer over centuries. I half-listened while running my hand along the cool rock. There were other groups around but it never felt crowded. A little later at Zelve Open-Air Museum (UNESCO site, didn’t know that before), we ducked into old cave homes. It was quiet inside except for our footsteps echoing off the walls. Kind of eerie, but in a good way.

Devrent Valley was all weird shapes. Someone said one rock looked like a camel and now I can’t unsee it. Lunch came just when I started to flag. Nothing fancy but warm bread and lentil soup hit the spot. In Avanos, we watched a pottery demo: turns out the clay comes straight from the Kizilirmak river running through town.
