The experience
The tour starts with the Red Valley, where abandoned cave churches from the 9th to 12th centuries dot walking trails between apricot and almond trees. You climb a small peak to see the valley light up in both directions: toward Mount Erciyes on one side and across the Cappadocia valleys on the other. The Fairy Chimneys of Pasabag come next, the rock spires that rise from the landscape like something from another planet, and Uchisar Castle sits on a ridge above, giving you a panoramic vantage point over the entire region.
The afternoon centers on Goreme Open Air Museum, where rock-cut Byzantine churches preserve frescoes and paintings from centuries of monastic life. The museum is the most concentrated collection of this art in Cappadocia, and you move through the churches with your guide explaining what you're seeing. After that comes Avanos, the pottery center, where a demonstration in a traditional workshop shows how local artisans have worked terra cotta since 3000 BC. The day ends underground: Özkonak Underground City, located 15 kilometers north of Avanos, is a multi-level settlement carved into the rock where families once lived and stored grain, and you walk through the passages to understand how people sheltered here.
Your guide speaks English or Spanish and handles all museum entry. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport between sites. The tour runs 5 to 8 hours depending on how long you spend at each stop and which option you choose (one day or two days) at checkout.

Is this one for you?Book the one-day option if you're in Cappadocia for just a few days and want to see the major sites in a single outing. Choose the two-day version if you have more time and want to move at a slower pace through the valleys and spend more time at each stop. A moderate level of fitness helps, since you'll walk trails in Red Valley and climb to viewpoints, but the tour doesn't require mountaineering experience.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 7).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What are the fairy chimneys, and why do they look the way they do?
The fairy chimneys are tall, cone-shaped rock formations created by erosion of the soft volcanic stone in Cappadocia. Wind and water carved them over millennia, leaving behind the spires you see at Pasabag and elsewhere across the region. They're called fairy chimneys because local legend says fairies lived inside them.
Can I walk inside the Byzantine churches at Goreme Open Air Museum?
Yes, Goreme Open Air Museum is a series of rock-cut churches you enter and walk through. The frescoes and paintings on the walls date from the 10th to 13th centuries, and your guide explains the religious imagery and history as you move from one church to the next.
How deep does Özkonak Underground City go, and what will I see there?
Özkonak Underground City extends multiple levels below ground. You walk through carved passages, storage rooms, and living quarters where families sheltered and stored grain. The settlement shows how people adapted to life underground for protection and climate control.
Is there time to walk in Red Valley, or do we just drive through?
Red Valley includes walking trails where you climb a small peak to see the landscape and the ancient cave churches scattered along the way. You're on foot here, not just passing through by vehicle, so you get close to the Uzumlu, Kolonlu, Hacli and Ayvali churches from the 9th to 12th centuries.
What's included in the tour price, and what do I need to pay for separately?
Hotel pickup and drop-off, all museum entrances, and your guide are included. Lunch and gratuities are not included, so you'll arrange and pay for your own meal during the day.
