The Experience

First thing I remember: the wind at Göreme Panorama, cool and dry, carrying the smell of dust and wild herbs. Our guide, Cem, pointed out the strange folds of rock below—he called them “fairy chimneys” but up close they look almost melted. The sun was still soft and yellow, not too harsh yet. There was a couple from Izmir on our tour; she kept laughing every time her boyfriend tried to pronounce “Ihlara”—I didn’t dare try.

Derinkuyu Underground City felt like stepping into someone else’s secret. The tunnels were narrower than I expected (if you’re tall, duck a lot), and it got cooler with every level down. Cem told us stories about families hiding here for months—he tapped the stone walls as he talked, like he could still hear echoes. My hands brushed rough stone; it smelled faintly damp, almost metallic. Not sure why but I thought about how quiet it must have been back then.

The walk through Ihlara Valley was actually my favorite part of this Cappadocia Green Tour day trip from Göreme. We followed the river for maybe an hour—just birds and that rush of water over stones. At one point we passed a woman selling apricots from a plastic bucket; she smiled but didn’t say much. Lunch was kebab by the river (the bread was warm, which felt oddly comforting after all that walking). Someone asked Cem if people still live in caves—he just grinned and said “sometimes.”

By late afternoon we were at Selime Monastery—so many empty rooms carved into the cliff it felt like a dream you half-remember later. Last stop: Pigeon Valley lookout near Uçhisar. The sky turned pinkish and hundreds of pigeons circled above those old stone houses. It’s hard to explain but there’s something peaceful about watching birds come home at sunset—even if you’re just passing through yourself.
