The Experience

You have a few hours between ship time and all-aboard, so the tour picks you up at Bodrum Cruise Port and moves straight into the day. The licensed guide speaks English and knows the city well enough to answer questions as you drive—no waiting around for a group to assemble. The van is air-conditioned and seats no more than 10 people, so the ride itself is comfortable and the stops feel unhurried.

Bodrum Castle dominates the waterfront, built in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John, and inside it the Museum of Underwater Archaeology holds one of the world's most important collections of ancient shipwrecks. You'll see the Uluburun wreck—one of the oldest ever found—along with amphorae, glassware, coins and personal items recovered from the seafloor thousands of years ago. The castle towers and courtyards also frame views across the Aegean. From there the tour takes you to the whitewashed windmills perched on the hills between Bodrum and Gümbet, built in the 18th and 19th centuries to grind grain; they're now a photographer's favorite for the panoramic views they command. The ancient amphitheater, carved into the hillside and dating to the 4th century BC, comes next—it still hosts concerts and cultural events, so you're standing in a place that has held audiences for over two thousand years.

The final stop is a local carpet cooperative in a nearby village, where women hand-weave rugs using natural dyes and wool. You watch a live demonstration of the craft, learn about regional patterns, and then sit down to a homemade Turkish lunch at the same cooperative. If you prefer not to eat there, you'll need to arrange and pay for a meal elsewhere. All entrance fees, the vehicle, the guide, parking and taxes are already included in the price, so there are no surprises at the gate or the register.
