The experience

The tour starts with a morning pickup from your Istanbul hotel and a flight to Adıyaman airport, where your guide meets you for the drive to Mount Nemrut. Lunch happens at a local restaurant on the way. You'll see the Karakuş Tumulus first: a funerary monument built around 30–20 BCE for a Commagene queen and two princesses, marked by a column topped with an eagle and surrounded by Doric columns about 9 metres high. The Cendere Bridge, a late Roman crossing of the Cendere Çayı creek, takes roughly two hours to explore. It sits 55 kilometres northeast of Adıyaman on the road to Sincik.

Arsemia, the summer residence of Commagene kings, sits sixty kilometres from Adıyaman and holds a relief of Heracles shaking hands with King Mithridates from around 50 BC, plus the greatest Greek inscription of Anatolia. Then you climb Mount Nemrut itself (2,134 metres high), where King Antiochus I built a tomb-sanctuary in 62 BCE flanked by eight to nine-metre statues of himself, two lions, two eagles and various gods. The heads have been scattered across the site over centuries, but the East and West Terraces still frame the statues, one group facing sunrise and the other sunset. You'll watch the sunset from the mountain before returning to your hotel in Kâhta.

Day two begins after breakfast with a drive to Şanlıurfa, known as the city of prophets. You'll visit the Urfa Archaeological Museum and the Aleppo Bahçe Mosaic Museum, both holding collections from Harran and the Göbekli Tepe area. The Ainzelha lake, stocked with millions of domesticated fish, comes next, followed by Abraham's cave, the birthplace of the prophet, and the Pool of Prophet Abraham, believed to be where he was thrown into fire by Nimrod. A walk through Şanlıurfa's covered bazaar rounds out the city exploration, with lunch featuring local kebabs. Then you visit Göbekli Tepe, dating back as far as 12,000 years and believed to be the world's oldest ritual complex, built before writing or pottery existed. An evening drive to the airport gets you back to Istanbul, where your guide drops you at your hotel.
