The Experience

Most people fly into Tunis thinking they'll see the capital. Instead, you're picked up and driven south—away from the city, toward the desert. The contrast hits fast: within hours you're standing in front of the 9th-century Aghlabid basins in Kairouan, then walking through the oldest grand mosque in North Africa, then eating lunch in the medina before the afternoon heat peaks. Your guide handles the timing and the routes; you just move through it. By evening you're in Tozeur, checked into a hotel with dinner waiting.

Day two is when the landscape actually changes. You start with waterfalls—Chebika and Tamerza—then move into canyons at Mides, all of it green and unexpected in a place you thought would be only sand. After lunch back in Tozeur, there's a horse-drawn carriage ride through the palm groves, then a stop at Ong Jemel, one of the Star Wars desert sets left standing from the original films. The road to Douz crosses the Chott el Djerid salt lake, and that's when the dunes take over completely. You spend the night in a Sahara camp—not a tent, but a proper bed with a roof—and there's dinner cooked on-site and drumming around the fire afterward. The camp is called Saharansky and it's the kind of place that doesn't feel like roughing it.

On day three you're underground. Matmata is a Berber village built into the earth—homes carved into the ground with courtyards sunk below street level. You eat lunch in one of those houses, sitting with locals, and the temperature stays cool no matter what's happening outside. From there you visit Ksar Hadada, an old castle on a hilltop, then Chenini with its 7th-century mosque and museum. You sleep in Tataouine that night. The final day moves you north again: Gabes for the Jara souk (where you can buy things without pressure), then El Jem to see the Roman amphitheater—the third largest in the world and the best preserved. It's genuinely massive. From there your driver takes you back to Tunis or wherever you need to be.

The whole thing runs on a private schedule with your own guide and driver, which means no waiting for other groups and no rushing through a site because the bus is leaving. Meals are included—breakfast, lunch, and dinner most days—and the water is always there. If you eat vegetarian or have dietary needs, you tell them when you book and they arrange it.
