The experience

The day starts at Chebika, an ancient Berber village built into the mountainside. A trail winds between cliffs and palms down to a natural spring with crystal-clear water where you can swim if the season allows. From there, the landscape opens onto Chott El Gharsa, a dried salt lake that stretches across the horizon: the kind of view that stops you mid-step. You'll have time to walk through Tamaghza, the region's largest oasis, bordered by cliffs and carved by a canyon, and can choose to eat a traditional lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the valley.

Mides comes next, a village perched above a red stone canyon on the Algerian border. You'll walk the old ksar (fortified settlement) and taste local dates. Then the 4x4 takes over: your driver-guide crosses Chott El Gharsa off-road, heading toward Ong Jmal, a rock formation that rises from a desert so barren it looks like the moon. The terrain shifts from oasis to emptiness in a way that makes the contrast real.

The tour ends at Mos Espa, the film set built for the Star Wars prequels. You walk freely through the settlement where Anakin Skywalker's scenes were shot, surrounded by the same desert and rock formations the cameras captured. The sunset happens here, over sand dunes and the sci-fi structures left standing. The whole day runs seven hours from pickup to drop-off.

Is this one for you?The tour runs seven hours, so it fills most of a day but leaves the morning or evening free for other plans in Tozeur. If you want to see multiple oases, canyons and desert landscapes without arranging separate transport, the fixed route and private vehicle mean you move between them without stops to organize anything yourself.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (8 to 11 years); Infant (4 to 7 years): free. Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.

What's the swimming like at Chebika?

Chebika has a natural spring with crystal-clear water fed by a waterfall, and you can swim there depending on the season. The spring sits in a hollow of rock surrounded by cliffs and palms, with views across the salt lake below.

Is lunch included in the tour?

Lunch is optional. If you choose it, you'll eat a traditional meal at a local restaurant in Tamaghza, seated on a terrace overlooking the valley. You arrange and pay for it separately.

What happens during the 4x4 crossing of Chott El Gharsa?

Your driver-guide takes the vehicle off-road across the dried salt lake, heading toward Ong Jmal. The crossing is the most dramatic part of the day. You're driving across a lunar landscape with a rock formation nicknamed "camel neck" as your destination.

Is Mos Espa worth visiting if I'm not a Star Wars fan?

Mos Espa is a film set built in the desert and left standing after shooting. Even if you've never seen the films, it's a curious structure in an empty landscape, and the sunset over the dunes and the settlement is the finale of the day.
