Step-by-step itinerary
Star Wars filming locations tour
- Visit Chott El Jerid salt lake
- Explore Sidi Bouhlel canyon
- See Tatooine Star Wars scenery
The experience
You're picked up from your hotel and driven south into the Tunisian desert, where the landscape itself becomes the set. The tour opens at Chott El Jerid, a salt lake spanning 5,000 square kilometers. You stop to photograph the flat expanse that stretches to the horizon, then move on to Sidi Bouhlel, the canyon nestled between the salt lake and the Atlas Mountains. This is where nine shots from the Star Wars films were filmed: it's the location of Luke's encounter with the Tusken Raiders and his rescue by Obi-Wan in Episode IV, and it was also used for Episodes I. The same canyon appeared in The English Patient.
From there you head to Ong Jemel, where the sequence of Darth Maul flying over the cliffs in pursuit of Anakin and Qui-Gon was shot. The tour then takes you to the famous Tatooine scenery from Episode IV: the desert landscape that defined the look of the planet for millions of viewers. Throughout the day you're traveling in an air-conditioned vehicle with a driver and a guide who speaks your language, and you have bottled water on hand. The route is manageable for all fitness levels, and the pacing gives you time to stand where the scenes were filmed and see how the actual terrain matches what you watched on screen.
