The drive out of Tozeur starts early, heading south toward Ksar Hadada, a fortified granary that once stored grain for Berber tribes and later served as a filming location for Star Wars. You'll walk through the narrow passages and rooms carved into the hillside, getting a sense of how these structures were built to protect supplies in the desert. After that, the road climbs into the Dhahar mountains toward Toujane, a village built into the slopes where the houses seem to grow out of the rock itself. There's a stop here for the view—the kind that makes you understand why people settled in these exact spots centuries ago.

Matmata is where the landscape shifts into something almost lunar. The village is famous for its underground dwellings, homes built down into the earth with courtyards sunk below ground level and rooms carved into the walls. You'll visit one of these troglodyte houses to see how families actually live—the cool interiors, the way light filters down, the practical genius of building this way in a place where the sun is relentless. Your guide walks you through the daily rhythms of Berber life, and lunch happens here, cooked and served in a way that connects to the place itself. The second day moves through more of the southern Ksars—fortified villages with their own rhythm and history—before returning to Tozeur in the evening.
