The experience

The day starts with a 30-minute drive to the Roman causeway of El Kantara, a 7.5-kilometer stone road built in the 2nd century to link the mainland to Djerba. After 15 minutes to walk and photograph it, you head inland toward Ksar Hadada, a two-hour drive through changing terrain. Ksar Hadada itself is a preserved fortified village of narrow streets, traditional adobe houses and carved doors: the kind of place that served as a Star Wars filming location. You spend 45 minutes exploring the maze of buildings and learning how people lived there in earlier centuries, then drive 30 minutes to Guermassa, a Berber village where you stop for 20 minutes to photograph the landscape and the views spreading out from it.

The route then turns toward Ksar Ghilane, the southernmost oasis in Tunisia and one of the gateways to the Sahara, an hour's drive away. Once there, you have 2.5 hours of free time to swim in the hot spring that emerges in the oasis (the water is said to have thermal properties), and to sit with the desert around you as the sun drops toward the dunes. If you want more than swimming and sitting, quad bike or camel rides to the Roman fort of Tisavar are available for an extra fee. Otherwise, the oasis time is yours to use as you choose.

From Ksar Ghilane, the 4x4 carries you an hour to Ksar Hallouf, another historic fortified village where you explore the architecture and the layout before sitting down to a traditional Tunisian dinner in an authentic setting. The meal is included. Drinks and gratuities are not. You return to your hotel after eating, completing a day that moves from Roman stone to desert oasis to candlelit food, all guided and transported as one package.
