The experience
You start in the Medina of Sousse, the old town explored on foot with a guide who shows the rich culture and history layered into its streets. The walk gives you time to shop and watch local life unfold before heading south along the coast toward Monastir. The air-conditioned vehicle does the driving. You take in the shoreline on the way.
The Ribat of Monastir is the centerpiece: an imposing fortress built in 796 by the Abbasid general and governor of Ifriqiya, rising from the Mediterranean shore. The Marina of Monastir sits nearby, home to one of the largest fish markets in Tunisia, where you can see the catch and the rhythm of the port. On the return to Sousse, you stop again at the Medina, giving you a second chance to browse the stalls or simply sit and watch the city move around you.
The whole outing runs about four hours. Your guide speaks your language (English, French or Arabic), and the vehicle is air-conditioned. Parking fees are covered. If you want to enter the Ribat itself, that ticket is optional and paid separately at the site.
