Two Roman sites in one day: the Theatre at Dougga, the amphitheatre at Uthina

A full-day private tour from Tunis to Dougga and Uthina, Tunisia's most significant Roman archaeological sites, with hotel pickup, a licensed guide, lunch and entrance fees included. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language you choose at booking. You visit Dougga first (the Theatre built in 168 AD, residential quarters, temples and the Licinian Baths), then travel to Uthina's amphitheatre, which once held 16,000 spectators for gladiatorial combat, and see mosaics from the villas nearby.

Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Uthina and Dougga archaeological sites

  • Visit archaeological site of Oudhna
  • Explore Dougga Theatre and residential quarter
  • See Temples and Licinian Baths in Dougga

The experience

Dougga sits on a hillside 30 kilometers south of Tunis and represents the height of Roman settlement in Tunisia. The day begins at the Theatre, built by a wealthy citizen named Marcus Quadratus in 168 AD, which could seat up to 3,500 people and still stands nearly intact. From there the tour moves through the residential quarter, past temples and down to the extensive Licinian Baths, with stops to photograph the Capitol and the surrounding landscape. The scale of what remains (the engineering, the detail in the stonework) becomes clear only when you walk through it.

Uthina lies 30 kilometers southwest of Tunis in the valley of Oued Miliane, a region known since ancient times for its fertile soil. The amphitheatre here held up to 16,000 spectators watching gladiatorial combat, and the villas scattered nearby have yielded mosaics that reveal how the wealthy lived. The two sites together show different facets of Roman life in North Africa: Dougga as a prosperous town with public monuments and private wealth, Uthina as a center of entertainment and domestic luxury.

The tour runs six hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off from Tunis or Hammamet, transport in an air-conditioned vehicle approved for tourists, entrance to both sites, lunch, and a licensed guide who speaks your chosen language. The guide is there to answer questions and provide context. The pace allows time to walk the sites and take photographs.
