Eight hours across Cap Bon: ancient ruins, carved stone, thermal water and artist studios

A guided day tour from Tunis through Cap Bon's archaeological and cultural sites, departing from your hotel and returning there after eight hours. The route covers Kerkouane's Punic ruins, the Roman Quarries at Haouaria, the natural hot spring Ain El Atrous in Korbus, pottery workshops in Nabeul, and Hammamet's medina and beach. Hotel pickup and drop-off, lunch and air-conditioned transport are included. A guide speaks your choice of English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of six other languages.

The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Tunis hotel and heads northeast to Kerkouane, Tunisia's only purely Punic archaeological site. From there the route continues to Haouaria at the peninsula's tip, where you'll see the Roman Quarries, Les Grottes, carved directly into the stone. These aren't caves formed by nature but extraction sites where Romans cut blocks for construction, and the scale of the work is visible in the stone faces themselves.

After the quarries, the tour moves to Korbus to visit Ain El Atrous, a hot spring that runs into the sea. You can wade into the thermal water where it meets the coast. The next stop is Nabeul, 40 miles from Tunis, where the town's reputation for pottery is immediate: workshops line the streets and you'll see potters at work. From there it's a short drive to Hammamet, originally named for its hammams (public bathhouses) and now a major coastal resort. The medina is small and intact, the beach is wide and sandy, and the town has drawn artists for decades: Paul Klee, André Gide and Frank Lloyd Wright all lived and worked here, and modern artists continue to build studios in the area. Lunch is included before the return drive to Tunis.

A guide travels with the group throughout, speaking English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of six additional languages. Transport is by air-conditioned minivan, and the full day, eight hours door to door, is structured to fit multiple sites without rushing between them.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off from your Tunis accommodation.
  • air-conditioned minivan transport throughout the day.
  • a guide fluent in your choice of language.
