The experience

The route starts at El Djem, where the Coliseum stands as one of the largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheaters outside Italy, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. From there the tour moves south to Matmata, where Berber communities built dwellings directly into the earth centuries ago: a settlement pattern that later drew filmmakers for Star Wars and continues to offer a stark contrast to the desert above. You overnight in a troglodyte hotel, sleeping in the traditional underground architecture rather than observing it from outside.

Day two takes you through Chenini, a tiered Berber village that has been continuously inhabited for centuries and remains one of the best-preserved examples of traditional North African mountain settlement, then to Ksar Hdada, a fortified granary complex with small slit windows and central courtyards built by Berber communities as early as the 11th century to protect agricultural stores from raiders. The day ends at Douz, an oasis town on the edge of the Sahara known as the gateway to the desert, where you stay at a camp in the dunes. Chott El-Jerid, the vast salt-encrusted landscape you cross on day three, creates an otherworldly terrain before you reach Tozeur, an expansive oasis surrounded by date palm plantations that have been cultivated for centuries and form the economic and cultural heart of the region.

The final day moves north through Sbeitla, an ancient Roman and Byzantine city with three temples dedicated to the Capitoline Triad and the Arch of Diocletian still standing, then to Kairouan, the fourth holiest city in Islam and home to the Great Mosque founded in 670 AD, before ending in Sousse on the coast. A multilingual guide leads the entire tour in your choice of English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or two additional languages. Hotel pickup is included from the start.

Is this one for you?Four days is the span needed to move from the Roman sites of the north through the Berber heartland and desert settlements to the oases and back up the coast: shorter tours miss the southern villages and granaries, while longer ones would double back or add separate regions. This length fits travelers who want depth in one region rather than a sprint through multiple destinations.
