The experience

A 4x4 transfer carries you 70 kilometers from Douz deep into the desert to meet your dromedaries, guide and camel drivers. The caravan sets out across the red-ochre dunes of the Sahara, and you walk or ride depending on your energy. The first day ends an hour before sunset when the herders set up camp: a fire, a hearty dinner, and music and singing into the night. You sleep under the stars at the bivouac.

Day two follows the same rhythm: breakfast and a pancake cooked on the embers, a morning walk on the large dune massif with a 30-minute break around 10am, lunch prepared together at noon (a pancake over a wood fire, then a short rest), and another evening around the fire. The nomadic guides teach you their songs and dances, and you eat local dishes cooked the way they cook them. There is no schedule beyond the sun and the caravan's pace.

On the final morning you eat a rich breakfast, then ride until noon when the 4x4 arrives to drive you back to Douz, with an estimated arrival around 4pm. The trek is built around walking and riding at your own rhythm, once tired, you mount a dromedary. Once rested, you walk again. A live guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or German.

What is the Djebil National Park and where does the trek go inside it?
