The experience

The tour centers on the panyards themselves: the yards where steelpan orchestras rehearse and the instrument comes alive. You'll visit bands with deep competition histories: one with 10 championship titles preparing their arrangement for Panorama, another with 12 wins known for a distinctive rehearsal style, and a third orchestra with 7 titles whose approach is rooted in classical precision. At each yard, you move through the space where musicians work, see the different types of steelpans in use, and hear the sound as the band plays. Your guide, a musician himself, explains what you're hearing and can speak to the craft from lived experience.

The panyards double as social hubs, so you'll see food, conversation and the rhythm of community life alongside the music. There are photo opportunities throughout, and the tour gives you time to compare the orchestras' styles and preferences. Bottled water and WiFi are included. Pickup is arranged from your location, so you don't need your own transport to reach the yards.

What exactly is Panorama and why do these bands prepare for it?

Panorama is the National Steelpan Competition in Trinidad and Tobago, where orchestras compete at the highest level. The bands you visit are among the most decorated in the competition's history, and the tour lets you see them in the weeks or days before they perform.

Will I actually hear the bands play, or just see them rehearsing?

Can I meet the musicians or talk to them about the steelpan?

Your guide is a musician and will share his knowledge throughout the tour. At some yards, you may also meet the Musical Arranger (the person who composes and arranges the orchestra's music) depending on their availability when you visit.
