The Experience
The speed boat leaves Thong Sala Pier 45 minutes after you board, carrying you through an archipelago of 42 islands that rise as dramatic rock formations from the sea. Your guide briefs you on safety before departure. The first stop is open water snorkeling under huge limestone cliffs in crystal blue waters along the coastline. This is where you put on the gear and spend an hour in the water. The boat then moves to the next island for swimming and sightseeing at the beach.
Mid-day brings a Thai buffet lunch served near the Marine Park ranger station on the sand. After eating, you switch to a sit-on-top kayak and paddle for about 45 minutes along the coastline of Mae Koh Island through the emerald waters that give the park its name. The afternoon is yours to sunbathe, swim, snorkel again or rest on the white sand beaches. A few minutes by boat takes you to Koh Mae Ko Island, where a 10-minute climb up steps leads to the viewpoint overlooking the Emerald Lagoon: a saltwater lake ringed by sheer cliffs that is the signature sight of the park. By mid-afternoon the speed boat heads back to Thong Sala Pier, and a minivan returns you to your hotel on Koh Phangan.
Hotel pickup starts between 7:50 and 8:15 am depending on your location on the island. You'll need to bring or remember your passport number for the insurance form filled out at the pier. Life jackets, snorkeling gear and kayak equipment are provided. Drinking water and fresh fruit come with the day.
