The experience
Eight hours door-to-door, starting with hotel pickup between 8 and 8:30am and ending back at your hotel around 4:30pm. The day splits into two islands: first Koh Tao for the deeper snorkeling, then Koh Nangyuan for lunch and the shallower reef. A minivan takes you to Thong Sala Pier on Koh Phangan's west coast, where you board the speedboat at 9:20am after a light breakfast and safety briefing. The boat ride to Koh Tao takes about 70 minutes.
Your first snorkel happens at one of four bays (Lighthouse Bay, Mango Bay, Tanote Bay or Ao Hin Wong) chosen by the guide based on that day's tides. You spend 90 minutes in the water with a life jacket and full snorkeling gear, exploring coral reefs in blue water and the sandbars carved by ocean currents. After that, the boat heads to Koh Nangyuan, a private island actually made up of three small islands connected by a massive sandbar. Lunch is a Thai buffet served at the beachfront restaurant.
The afternoon is yours to shape. You can sunbathe on the white sand, snorkel again in the shallow waters at Japanese Garden Reef (where fish are plentiful and the water is calm), or take the short walk to the hilltop viewpoint, a climb of less than 15 minutes that opens onto the postcard view of the three islands and their connecting sandbar. Most people do some of each. By 2:45pm the group heads back to the speedboat for the return to Koh Phangan, arriving at the pier around 4pm and at your hotel by 4:30pm.
