The Experience

"You can leave your shoes in the basket — nobody needs them out here," our captain grinned as we stepped onto the deck. I hesitated, clutching my sandals for a second (old habit), but everyone else was already barefoot, laughing as the boards warmed under our feet. The air smelled like salt and sunscreen, and the music was just starting to pulse. Our group was a mix — some local friends of the crew, a few travelers from Germany and Australia, even a couple celebrating something (we never found out what). I liked that it didn’t feel staged or forced. Just people ready to let loose for an afternoon.

The boat pulled away from Phuket’s harbor with that low engine hum you feel in your chest more than your ears. Someone handed me a drink — honestly couldn’t tell you what it was except cold and sweet — and we drifted past little green islands while the DJ eased into house tracks. At one point I tried to say “cheers” in Thai; Li laughed so hard she nearly spilled her cocktail (I probably butchered it). There were sun loungers up top if you wanted to chill, but most of us ended up by the slides or at the buffet table picking at noodles and grilled chicken. The food was better than I expected for a boat party — not fancy, just good.

I lost track of time somewhere between dancing and jumping off the back railings with strangers who felt like friends by then. The sun dropped lower and everything turned this gold-pink color that made everyone look softer somehow. Right before we headed back toward Phuket, they turned on the foam machine — bubbles everywhere, people slipping around laughing like kids. My hair still smelled like coconut shampoo mixed with ocean when we finally got dropped off at our hotel (included in the ticket — lifesaver). Honestly? I still think about that view from the water when the sky went orange behind us.
