The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel and takes you to the speedboat. The boat heads out to Koh Nang Yuan first: a twin-island formation connected by a white sandbar that sits in the middle of the water. You climb to the viewpoint and stand above turquoise shallows and lush green slopes, the kind of angle that photographs the way the place actually looks. Then you're back on the boat and heading to Lighthouse Beach, where the coral gardens start right off the sand and schools of fish move through water so clear you see them before you enter it.

Aow Leuk Bay comes next. The name means "deep bay," and the water shifts through shades of blue as it deepens. A coral reef runs along both sides of the bay, and you don't have to swim far to find marine life. The shallows here are a nursery for baby blacktip reef sharks, so you may see them moving through water barely deeper than your waist. The beach is white sand and pebbles, and the snorkeling is the main event. The sunbathing happens after. Your last stop is Shark Bay, where the larger blacktip reef sharks, some over six feet long, crisscross the bay at depths of 6 to 12 feet. Green sea turtles and reef fish move through the same water. You're in the water with your own equipment, watching the animals in their space.
