The experience
Five hours covers the route from your hotel through Koh Samui's mix of temples, rock formations and water. The minivan picks you up air-conditioned and drops you back the same way, so the time in the van is time you're not arranging transport yourself. A local guide leads the group through each stop in English, explaining what you're standing in front of rather than leaving you to guess.
Big Buddha Temple sits on a small island reached by climbing steps to a gallery overlooking the coast. Plai Laem temple, a century old, holds a striking white 18-arm Guanyin statue (called the "Chinese Lady Monk") and a large Maha Kaccayana figure. You can feed the fish in the pond by donation. From Laad Koh View Point you see Chaweng Beach stretching 7 kilometers. Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks are a natural formation on Lamai Beach where local shops sell souvenirs and Kalamae, a Thai sweet made of glutinous rice flour, palm sugar and coconut cream. The 16-meter bronze Guan Yu statue marks the island's Chinese heritage, and Wat Khunaram holds the mummified body of Luang Por Daeng, a monk who died over 50 years ago and remains largely un-decomposed: a sacred sight for locals. Na Muang Waterfall ends the tour: a 15-meter cascade drops into a natural pool where you can swim and cool off.
The tour includes one bottled drink and a refresh towel. Remaining time in the five hours goes to transport between stops. Children from age 1 are welcome, though the tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health.
