The Experience
We got picked up near Chaweng, still half-awake but already sweating a bit — Koh Samui mornings are sticky, you know? The drive was short, maybe ten minutes, and the guy at the entrance just grinned and handed us footballs. I’d never played footgolf before (didn’t even know it was a thing), but the course wound right through these wild gardens — mango trees, coconut palms, all sorts of green everywhere. It smelled like cut grass and something sweet I couldn’t place. My friend tried to show off his “technique” on the first hole and nearly lost his ball in a bush. We all cracked up.
The whole 18-hole footgolf course felt more like a walk than a match — gentle slopes, soft earth underfoot, bits of sun poking through leaves. Our local guide, Somchai, kept pointing out weird plants (“That’s for curry,” he said at one point), and every now and then we’d hear birds or see some gecko dart across the path. There were families with little kids pushing strollers too — nobody seemed in any rush. At one hole there was this sudden waft of frangipani; I stopped just to breathe it in for a second.
By the end we were half muddy from chasing stray shots but nobody cared. They gave us cold drinks (I went for something fizzy) and we sat around swapping stories with another group who’d come from near Big Buddha. Someone joked about starting a league back home. I still think about that lazy walk under the trees — it wasn’t about winning at all, just being outside together for once instead of glued to our phones.
