You’ll feel the rush of diving Thailand’s largest shipwreck near Koh Chang with a local guide by your side. Drift over vibrant coral gardens in calm waters, snack on fresh fruit between dives, and share stories with fellow divers on deck before heading back with salt in your hair and a new favorite memory.
Ever wondered what it feels like to drop below the surface off Koh Chang and see a giant shipwreck appear out of the blue? I didn’t really know what to expect until we pulled up to the HTMS Chang — it’s massive, honestly. Our guide, Lek, grinned when he saw my face. He said locals still talk about how they sank it here on purpose, just so divers could have something wild to explore. The water had that salty, metallic smell you get near big ships, and even before we rolled in I could hear my own breath getting faster inside my mask.
The first dive was all about exploring the wreck — swimming past old railings where tiny fish darted in and out. Lek pointed out a lionfish hiding in a shadowy corner (I definitely would’ve missed it). There was this moment when everything went quiet except for our bubbles. It’s kind of eerie but peaceful too. After surfacing, someone passed around pineapple slices on the boat — sweet and cold against all that saltwater skin. We talked about maybe adding a third dive if we felt up for it; apparently you can do that some days if you ask ahead.
For the second dive, we headed over to one of Koh Rang’s coral sites. The water was calmer there — almost glassy — and there were these clouds of little yellow fish everywhere. I tried to remember their Thai name but totally blanked; Lek just laughed and said not to worry, most people forget after lunch anyway. The sun came out right as we surfaced and everything looked kind of unreal for a second. I still think about that light sometimes when I’m stuck at my desk back home.
