The experience
The day opens at Erawan National Park, where the 7-tiered waterfall drops into pools you can swim in. The walk through the park takes you past each tier, and the emerald water is deep enough to cool off in the middle of the day. From there you head to Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, a sobering stop that documents the WWII prisoners of war who were forced to carve the railway line through the jungle. The museum sits at the actual pass where the work happened.
The scenic train ride on the Death Railway is the centerpiece of the afternoon. You travel on the historic line itself, passing through landscapes that shaped this route's dark history. The train crosses Tham Krasae Bridge, a wooden railway bridge built into a dramatic cliffside, and you'll see the Bridge on the River Kwai from the train. The route moves slowly enough to take in the surroundings and photograph the landmarks. Lunch is provided during the day, and you'll have a towel and life jacket for the waterfall swimming.
Private transportation picks you up and handles the driving between each stop, so the day is paced without the logistics of arranging your own route. The vehicle is air-conditioned. The guide speaks both English and Thai, and can answer questions about the sites as you move through them. Children from age 1 are welcome. Infant seats are available if needed.
