The Experience

I’ll be honest, I almost missed the pickup because I couldn’t find my other sandal — classic me. The driver waited though, grinning like he’d seen this before. We ducked into a tuk-tuk next (I’d forgotten how loud those things are) and rattled through narrow alleys to see some of Bangkok’s old temples. Pim pointed out details I would’ve missed: faded murals tucked behind incense smoke, monks in orange robes laughing quietly by the gate. Lunch was at a spot near Siam Paragon — nothing fancy looking but so good. Sticky rice that clung to my fingers and a curry that made my nose run (in a good way). Pim laughed when I tried to say “thank you” in Thai — probably butchered it.

Somewhere between dessert (coconut ice cream) and wandering Talat Noi with its wild street art and Chinese shophouses, the sky threatened rain but never really followed through. There were families eating together on plastic stools outside their shops; kids waving as we passed by in our tuk-tuk like we were something worth noticing for a second. The day didn’t go exactly as planned but maybe that’s why it stuck with me.
