The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect from the Maeklong Train Market — I’d seen videos, but standing there in Samut Songkhram, it felt different. Our guide, Noi, nudged us closer just as the whistle sounded. Suddenly, everyone moved at once — umbrellas folding up, baskets scooted back. The train rolled through so close I could’ve touched it (I didn’t). There was this weird mix of excitement and normalcy; locals barely looked up from their stalls. I caught the scent of grilled fish and something sweet — maybe coconut? — as the train passed, and then everything snapped back into place like nothing happened. It’s hard to explain unless you see it.

After that rush, we drove out to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. The canals were busy but not chaotic — more like a slow shuffle of boats bumping gently together. We climbed into a narrow paddle boat (I nearly lost my hat) and drifted past vendors selling mangoes, noodles, even hats stacked higher than my head. At one point I tried to ask for “kanom krok” in Thai; the woman selling them just grinned and handed me a hot little tray anyway. The coconut smell was everywhere. Our guide pointed out which fruits were local — dragonfruit, tiny bananas — and told us stories about her childhood here.

The whole day felt like a strange mix of old routines and tourist curiosity. There were moments when it was loud — engines sputtering, people calling out prices — but then we’d turn a corner and it would go quiet except for the splash of paddles or someone laughing nearby. I still think about that moment when the train came through; how everyone just worked around it like it was no big deal. Makes you wonder what things you get used to at home without noticing.
