The Experience

Hands pressed to the elevator glass, I watched the city blur by as we shot up toward the top of King Power Mahanakhon. Our guide, Pim, grinned at my wide eyes—she said everyone does that on their first ride. The elevator itself is a bit of a show, with video screens flashing scenes of Bangkok’s old markets and neon nights. My ears popped somewhere around floor 60. When the doors opened on the 74th level, it was like stepping into a floating bubble above the city. The air inside smelled faintly metallic, maybe from all that glass and steel.

Pim pointed out landmarks through the floor-to-ceiling windows—Lumphini Park looked like a tiny green patchwork quilt, and I could just make out boats crawling along the Chao Phraya River. There were interactive screens showing what was what, but honestly I kept getting distracted by the shifting light as clouds moved over the skyline. We tried out this augmented reality thing that overlays info on your phone screen; I mostly just laughed at how confused my dad got trying to line up his camera.
