If you want to see another side of Bangkok—quiet gardens, hidden art collections, and stories you won’t find in most guidebooks—this tour is for you. You’ll get hands-on with Thai silk history at Jim Thompson House and wander through Suan Pakkad Palace’s antique-filled halls, all with a local guide who knows every corner.
You know you’re close to the Jim Thompson House when the city noise fades and the air gets thick with the smell of wet earth—especially after a morning rain. Our guide, Nok, met us right at the entrance, waving us over with a grin. The teakwood houses here feel almost secret, tucked behind lush gardens and just steps from the Saen Saeb Canal. Inside, we wandered through rooms filled with Southeast Asian art—some pieces older than my grandparents—and learned how Jim Thompson, an American who fell in love with Thailand after WWII, helped revive the country’s silk industry. There’s even a spot where you can touch raw silk threads; they’re softer than you’d think.
Later on, we made our way to Suan Pakkad Palace. It’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it—the name means “cabbage patch,” which our guide joked about as we passed by street vendors selling snacks I’d never seen before. The palace grounds are peaceful, dotted with ponds and shaded by old trees. Each of the eight traditional Thai houses is packed with antiques and odd little treasures—Ban Chiang pottery that’s thousands of years old, royal musical instruments, even some quirky masks from old performances. I noticed a faint scent of incense drifting from one of the shrines while we listened to stories about Prince Paripatra and his family.
Yes, both men and women need to cover shoulders and knees at Suan Pakkad Palace. If you forget, they have clothing you can borrow at the entrance.
No worries—both places are wheelchair accessible and strollers are fine too. Just let us know if you need any special arrangements.
The whole experience takes around half a day, including hotel pickup (timing depends on your location).
You can snap pictures in most outdoor areas but some indoor rooms may have restrictions—your guide will let you know where it’s okay.
Your ticket covers entrance fees for both museums, a friendly local guide who really knows their stuff, plus hotel pickup and drop-off from select hotels. We’ve got options for families with infants or anyone needing wheelchair access too.
