Two days living with an Akha hill-tribe family in the mountains

A 2-day private eco-trek in Chiang Rai takes you to an Akha village in the jungle with an English-speaking guide, overnight accommodation, and all meals included. You hike through the mountains, learn fishing and farming from the villagers, and eat what you cook together. Hotel pickup starts the journey. The trek ends with a drive back to Chiang Rai on day two.

The experience

Hotel pickup between 8:30 and 9:00am on day one sets the pace: a 2–3 hour trek through the jungle with your guide, who points out local herbs and plants along the way. You'll stop at a waterfall to cool off, then eat a bamboo-cooked lunch before a second trek of 1–2 hours takes you to a Lahu tribe village. That evening you reach the Akha village, where you stay overnight and have dinner with your host family.

Day two starts with breakfast in the village, then you join the Akha in a fishing activity, casting nets in the mountain streams, and cook what you catch for lunch. A final 1–2 hour trek follows before a scenic drive brings you back to Chiang Rai. The guide speaks English and Thai throughout, and all meals, water and accommodation in the village are included.

This is a small-group tour: two people minimum. Children from age five are welcome. The trek involves moderate hiking on mountain terrain, and the immersion is total: no vehicles or crowds, just the daily rhythm of the village itself.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Thai.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Infant (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What's the actual hiking like on this 2-day trek?

Two hikes make up the walking: a 2–3 hour trek on day one through the jungle to the Lahu village, then a 1–2 hour trek on day two after the fishing activity. Both follow mountain paths. The guide sets a steady pace and stops for water and rest. Suitable for all fitness levels, though the terrain is uneven and the altitude gains gradually.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?

Hotel pickup in Chiang Rai is included. Your guide collects you between 8:30 and 9:00am on day one. On day two, a scenic drive returns you to Chiang Rai at the end of the trek, so no separate transport is needed.

What do you actually do with the Akha villagers during the fishing activity?

You join them in casting nets in the mountain streams to catch fish, then prepare and cook your catch for lunch. It's a working meal, not a demonstration. You're doing it alongside them, learning their technique as you go.

What's the Akha village accommodation like?

You stay overnight in the village itself with a host family. Accommodation is basic, traditional village lodging, and included in the price along with all meals cooked in the village.
