The Experience

The morning starts in Stone Town, where the guide walks you through the narrow winding streets lined with historic buildings—the Old Fort, the House of Wonders palace, Christ Church Cathedral, and the site of the last slave market. You'll see how Arab, Indian, Persian and European influences blended with African tradition over more than a millennium, visible in the elaborately carved wooden doors, shaded balconies and loggias that frame the townscape. The market visit and about 30 minutes of shopping time are built into this part of the tour.

The spice farm portion takes up the second half of the morning. The farm guide explains how Zanzibar earned its nickname as one of the Spice Islands—the archipelago produces cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, vanilla, cardamom and more, many used both as medicine and in cooking. You touch the plants, smell the spices at their freshest, and taste them directly. Along with the spice plants, you'll see and taste fresh tropical fruits growing on the farm. A coconut tree climber picks young coconut fruits for you to try. The tour ends at the farm shop, where you have the chance to buy spices to take home.

Private transportation is included throughout, and the guide meets you at your hotel in one of five zones across the island. Bottled water travels with you. The whole tour runs about six hours from start to finish.
