The Experience
We started our morning in Stone Town, right as the city was waking up. The air smelled faintly of cloves and sea breeze. Our guide, Salim, led us through narrow lanes where you could hear the call to prayer mixing with street vendors setting up at Darajani Market. He pointed out the Old Fort—its thick walls still standing after centuries—and we ducked into the House of Wonders. There’s something about seeing those carved wooden doors up close that makes you realize how much history is packed into these streets.
The Slave Market Museum was next. It’s not an easy stop, but it’s important. Down in the old chambers, you can almost feel the weight of what happened there. Salim shared stories about Zanzibar’s past that I’d never heard before—he even showed us a tiny plaque most people miss near the altar.
By midday, we were off to a spice farm just outside town. The sun was warm but not too harsh; you could smell cinnamon and cardamom before you saw them. We tasted fresh ginger straight from the ground (it’s way spicier than what I’m used to back home). The farmers explained how locals use nutmeg for both cooking and medicine—apparently it helps with stomach aches.
Last stop: Changuu Island, also called Prison Island by locals. The boat ride over was quick—maybe 20 minutes? Once there, we met giant Aldabra tortoises lounging under trees. Some are over 100 years old! You’re allowed to feed them lettuce (they move slow but they know when food’s coming). If you want, there’s time for a swim or snorkeling—the water here is clear and calm most days.
