The Experience

Is it weird that the first thing I remember is the sound? That low, distant rumble of elephants somewhere out in Tarangire, right after we left Arusha. Our guide, Joseph, just grinned and pointed — “That’s how you know they’re close.” I was still half-asleep from the early pickup but suddenly wide awake. The jeep smelled like dust and instant coffee. By noon we’d already seen more zebras than I could count, plus lions lounging like they owned the place (which I guess they do). It’s strange to feel so small and so awake at the same time.

The next day we stopped at this lookout over Ngorongoro Conservation Area — honestly, it didn’t look real. Mist hanging over that huge green bowl, sun just burning through. Joseph let us just stand there for a while; nobody said much. Later he asked if we wanted to visit a Maasai village (I did). The kids giggled when I tried to greet them in Maa — definitely butchered it — but one woman showed me how she made her beadwork and I bought a bracelet for my sister back home. That night in Serengeti camp, hyenas yipped somewhere close by. Our chef made ugali and stew; tasted smoky, maybe from the fire or maybe just because everything tastes stronger out here.

I didn’t expect mornings to be so cold in Tanzania — had to wear every layer I brought before sunrise game drives. One morning we watched a pride of lions wake up right as the sky turned pink. You could hear wildebeest snorting nearby, birds going off like alarms. Later in Ngorongoro crater we spent ages trying to spot a black rhino (no luck at first), but then Joseph spotted one way off near some acacias. He got as excited as we did — “Very lucky!” he kept saying.

Lake Manyara on our last day felt softer somehow: flamingos everywhere, hippos wallowing in muddy pools, monkeys darting around our jeep windows. By then everyone was sunburnt and tired but also kind of quiet — like nobody wanted it to end yet. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you’ve seen until you’re packing up your tent for the last time.
