The experience
The morning starts with a hotel pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle, then a short drive to one of several departure points on Zanzibar's northeast coast: Matemwe, Nungwi, or another beach depending on where you're staying and the day's sea conditions. Once at the boat, you'll get a safety briefing and snorkeling instruction before boarding a traditional wooden boat or speedboat. The crew fits you with gear and a life jacket, and by 8:30 a.m. you're heading toward Mnemba Island.
The boat ride itself is part of the experience: you'll cruise through waters where bottlenose and spinner dolphins live, and if conditions allow, you'll spot them swimming freely. Around 10 a.m., the boat stops at one of Zanzibar's most vibrant coral reefs. You enter the water with your guide and spend time snorkeling among colorful fish, occasional sea turtles, and coral formations. The guides stay close to help beginners and ensure everyone's safe. By midday, you return to the boat for a break: fresh tropical fruit and water while you rest in the warm ocean breeze.
The return journey gives you another chance to see dolphins along the way. You're back at shore by early afternoon and transferred to your hotel, ending around 1 p.m. The whole outing runs four to five hours from pickup to drop-off. Lunch is not included, so eat before you go or plan to grab something once you're back on land.
