Step-by-step itinerary

Hike to Lupanga Peak and back

  • Start tour at 6:30am from hotel
  • Hike through farmland to nature reserve
  • Pass through forest and see wildlife
  • Reach Lupanga Peak and view Germany tower
  • Enjoy views before forest and middle forest
  • Return hike to hotel

The experience

The hike starts at 6:30am from your hotel and heads straight to Kibwe village, where the trail begins at the end of Forest Hill Road. From there the route climbs steeply through farmland and into the nature reserve, following a ridge up to the peak. The ascent is physical and takes 10 to 12 hours round trip, gaining over 2,100m of elevation. A local guide leads the way and handles navigation through the reserve. The guide speaks English and knows the terrain well enough to spot wildlife most visitors would miss.

On the way up you'll see black and white colobus monkeys, forest birds like Livingston Turaco and Silvery-cheeked Hornbills, and flowering plants along the ridge. The views open up before you reach the forest canopy. You see the Morogoro town side of the landscape from lower elevations, then move into the dense forest itself. At the peak sits a Germany tower, a viewing structure that lets you look out across the eastern side of Uluguru Mountain on clear days. The descent follows the same route back to Kibwe village and your hotel.

This hike is not safe in the wet season, when the steep trail becomes slippery and dangerous. The physical demand is high: the grade, the altitude and the full-day commitment mean you need genuine fitness and acclimatization to the elevation. Lunch is provided during the day, and the forest permit is handled as part of the booking.

What’s included

  • Forest permit and guiding fee with an English-speaking local guide.
  • lunch during the day.
