Paddle the deepest lake in the region and walk to volcanic viewpoints

A private guided activity at Lake Chala, straddling the Tanzania-Kenya border, where you kayak for an hour around the lake, swim if you want, then walk to bedrock formations and a viewpoint overlooking Lake Jipe and Kilimanjaro on clear days. The tour runs 5 hours with a private guide in English, pickup, lunch, water and kayak gear all included. Children from age 4 are welcome.

The experience

Lake Chala is 97 meters deep and covers 4.2 square kilometers, formed roughly 250,000 years ago by volcanic activity. The lake sits 75% in Tanzania and 25% in Kenya, and holds fish and bird species found nowhere else in the world. Your guide meets you for pickup and drives you to the lake, where the day starts with views from above before a 15-minute walk down to the water's edge.

Once at the lake, you kayak for about an hour, paddling around the water while the volcanic bedrock walls rise around you. You can swim if the mood strikes, or stay in the kayak and take in the views. After the water, the walk continues to the lake's bedrock formations (the visible result of the volcanic forces that created it), and then up to a viewpoint where Kilimanjaro comes into view on clear days, along with Lake Jipe across the border.

Lunch and water are provided during the tour, and the kayak is part of the package. A private guide in English leads the whole day, so the pace and the stops are yours to shape. The 5-hour total includes all transport, walking and water time, so you're not arranging separate logistics or waiting for group departures.

What’s included

  • Private transportation to and from the lake.
  • a private English-speaking guide for the full 5 hours.
  • kayak and all paddling gear.
  • lunch and water throughout the day.

What makes Lake Chala different from other lakes in the region?

Lake Chala is the deepest lake in the area at 97 meters and is home to unique bird and fish species found nowhere else in the world. It formed roughly 250,000 years ago from volcanic activity, and the bedrock formations you walk to on the tour are the visible result of that geological history.

How much time do I actually spend kayaking?

Kayaking takes about an hour. You paddle around the lake at your own pace, and you can swim from the kayak or simply stay on the water and enjoy the views of the volcanic walls around you.

Will I be able to see Kilimanjaro from the viewpoint?

The viewpoint overlooks both Lake Jipe and Kilimanjaro, but visibility depends on the weather. On clear days you'll see the mountain. On hazy or cloudy days the view may be limited.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

The tour includes private transportation, the kayak, lunch, water and a private English-speaking guide. Bring sun protection, swimwear if you plan to swim, and comfortable walking shoes for the 15-minute descent and the walks to the bedrock and viewpoint.
