The Arusha Clock Tower marks the halfway point between Cairo and Cape Town.

A four-hour walking tour of Arusha led by a local guide, starting with hotel pickup and covering the historic Clock Tower, the Tanzanite Experience museum, the Central Food Market, the Maasai Market, and the African Art Gallery. You walk through the city's cultural landmarks, watch gemstone cutting demonstrations, browse local art and crafts, and bargain alongside residents at the markets.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Arusha's culture and markets

  • Visit German Boma Natural History Museum
  • Tour The Tanzanite Experience mine replica
  • See Arusha Clock Tower landmark
  • Shop at Maasai Market
  • Explore Arusha Central Food Market
  • Visit Cultural Heritage Centre and African Art Gallery

The experience

The tour starts at your hotel and moves through Arusha's core on foot, guided by someone born and raised in the city. The Clock Tower, built after World War II, sits at the symbolic center of Arusha and marks the midpoint between Cairo and Cape Town. A landmark your guide will help you photograph and understand. From there, the route takes you to the Tanzanite Experience, a 40-minute stop where you descend into a replica mine shaft, watch live gemstone cutting and polishing, and learn how these blue-purple stones found only in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro are graded and sorted. You can browse certified loose stones and jewelry afterward if you choose.

The Central Food Market is where the city's residents shop daily, and walking through it with your guide shows you tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, Tanzanian spices, coffee beans, and local grains in their actual context, not arranged for tourists. The Maasai Market, an open-air bazaar of handcrafted goods, is where you can see artisans at work and bargain for beaded jewelry, wooden sculptures, traditional fabrics, and woven baskets. The African Art Gallery, housed in a shield-shaped building, holds hand-carved wooden pieces, paintings, masks, and antique artifacts from across the continent, with peaceful gardens and a jewelry collection to browse.

Hotel pickup and drop-off near the city center are included, so you don't arrange transport separately. The guide speaks English and knows the history behind each stop: the German Boma (now the Natural History Museum) and its colonial-era stone architecture, the post-WWII Clock Tower, the stories of the markets themselves. Bring cash if you plan to buy souvenirs or eat at the markets. Meals and drinks are not included.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (9 to 14 years); Child (4 to 8 years); Infant (1 to 3 years): free.

What is the Tanzanite Experience, and what do you actually do there?

The Tanzanite Experience is a museum dedicated to Tanzania's rarest gemstone, found only near Mount Kilimanjaro. You walk through a replica mine shaft to feel what extraction is like, watch films about the stone's properties, and see live demonstrations of cutting and polishing before browsing certified stones and handcrafted jewelry.

Can you buy things at the Maasai Market and the food market, or is it just looking?

Both markets are working marketplaces where you can bargain and buy. The Maasai Market sells beaded jewelry, wooden sculptures, fabrics, paintings, and baskets made by local artisans. The Central Food Market sells fresh produce, spices, and coffee beans for personal use, though most travelers browse rather than shop for groceries.

What is the African Art Gallery like, and how long do you spend there?

The African Art Gallery is a multi-story museum shaped like a traditional shield, housing hand-carved wooden sculptures, paintings, masks, and antique artifacts from tribes across Africa. The tour includes a guided visit to the exhibits and the peaceful gardens, with time to browse the jewelry and craft collections.

Does the tour include the Natural History Museum in the German Boma?

The German Boma, built as a military fortress in the early 1900s and now Arusha's Natural History Museum, is mentioned in the tour description as a cultural stop. It holds three wings of authentic artifacts, historic photographs, and wildlife taxidermy exhibits that show Tanzania's colonial past and biodiversity.

Is lunch included, and where do you eat?

Lunch and drinks are not included in the tour price. You walk through the Central Food Market and the Maasai Market, where you can purchase food and drinks if you wish, but meals are your own expense.
