The Experience
The ride starts in Puli and heads west toward Wolling, the climb every serious cyclist in Taiwan measures themselves against. The route is 53 kilometres long with 2,800 metres of elevation gain, following the 14th line pass and climbing through farmland and peaks including Qigong, Tree Peak and Kun Yang before reaching the summit at 3,275 metres. This is the shortest west-to-Wolling route available, which means the climbing is relentless but the day stays contained.
An air-conditioned support vehicle travels with the group, so you can drop back when you need to recover without being left behind. The guide speaks English or Chinese and rides or travels with the group to manage the pace and watch for anyone struggling with the altitude and sustained effort. The total time is between 6 and 9 hours depending on the group's speed and how long people spend at the summit, so plan the rest of your day around a full morning and early afternoon commitment.
You'll need to bring your own bicycle or arrange a rental through the operator for an additional fee at checkout. The ride is not recommended for anyone with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy, and you need to be at least 16 years old. This is a test of fitness and mental toughness on one of Asia's most famous climbs -- the kind of day cyclists plan their trips around.
