The experience
We were already squinting up at the flag when our guide, Li, waved us over at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. I could hear school kids somewhere behind us, their voices echoing off all that white stone. Li didn’t rush. He just let us stand there for a minute, told us how his grandfather used to bring him here. The air felt heavy but not in a bad way. Just full of stories you can’t see on postcards. I tried to pronounce “Zhongzheng” like he did. Failed, but he smiled anyway.
Somewhere between the memorial and this little side street, we ended up barefoot on a reflexology path. Stones pressed into my feet: way sharper than I expected. Li said it was good for circulation. I’m not sure about that, but it definitely woke me up. The smell of dried fruit hit before we even saw the market entrance (honestly, you’d walk right by if you didn’t know). We picked out candied plums while an old lady shook her head at my clumsy Mandarin. She laughed though, so maybe it wasn’t that bad.
The MRT was packed but fast: Bao’an Temple looked almost unreal after all that subway noise. Lanterns everywhere, incense thick in the air. I watched an old man bow three times and wondered what he was wishing for. After that came bubble tea from a shop older than me (Li swears by their taro), and then somehow we were weaving through alleys again, talking about how Taipei changes every year but still feels like itself.
I didn’t expect to like the Fine Arts Museum as much as I did. Something about the light inside made everything seem softer. We wandered the park outside too, where kids ran around sculptures and someone played guitar under a tree. At Maji Market later, I tried fried squid from a food truck and got sticky fingers. Li bought some organic ginger for his mom. We just sat there for a bit listening to people argue over prices or weekend plans or whatever else people talk about in Taipei on a Saturday afternoon.
