The Experience

I didn’t expect to sweat this much before noon, but Jiufen’s stairways have their own plans for your legs. Our guide (Mr. Chen—he kept apologizing for the drizzle, as if he controlled the weather) led us right into the heart of these twisting lanes. The air was thick with that sweet smell of taro balls and something fried I still can’t name. We ducked under red lanterns and squeezed past grandmas selling dried plums.
