The experience
I didn’t expect to sweat this much before noon, but Jiufen’s stairways have their own plans for your legs. Our guide (Mr. Chen. He kept apologizing for the drizzle, as if he controlled the weather) led us right into the heart of these twisting lanes. The air was thick with that sweet smell of taro balls and something fried I still can’t name. We ducked under red lanterns and squeezed past grandmas selling dried plums. At one point a cat just stared at me from a windowsill: like it knew I’d get lost if I blinked.
We had time to sit in an old tea house overlooking the mountains. Honestly, I don’t even drink tea much but there was something about watching mist roll over those green hills while sipping oolong that made me forget about my phone for a bit. Mr. Chen told us how Jiufen inspired “Spirited Away” (I could see it, the place feels half real, half dream). He also warned us: bring cash for snacks. I tried to order stinky tofu and totally butchered the pronunciation. The vendor laughed and gave me extra chili anyway.
