summary

Summary

Lantern-lit skies, tea houses and waterfalls near Taipei

You’ll climb through Jiufen’s winding alleys, taste local snacks, watch golden waterfalls shimmer in the hills outside Taipei, and send your own sky lantern up from Pingxi’s old rail line. Expect laughter with your guide, a few surprises (and stairs), and moments that linger long after you’re back in town.

I didn’t expect the air to smell like sweet rain when we got out at Jiufen — maybe it was the mountain mist or just my nerves. Our guide, Mrs. Lin, had this gentle way of telling stories about the old gold miners as we walked up those steep stairs (my legs still remember). She pointed out a tiny stall selling taro balls — honestly, I’d never tried them before and they were warm and chewy, almost like a hug in food form. The alleys were packed but not in a bad way; more like everyone was quietly excited to be there together.

We stopped at the Golden Waterfall next — the rocks really do shimmer gold in the sunlight. It’s not huge but something about the color catches you off guard. Mrs. Lin explained how minerals from old mines seep into the water. I kept thinking how odd it is that something left behind by people can make nature look even wilder. Then there was that moment at Yin Yang Sea — blue and yellow swirling together under this weirdly bright sky. Kind of surreal.

Shifen Waterfall was louder than I thought it would be (in a good way). You feel the spray on your face before you even see it. We took photos but mostly just stood there listening — sometimes you forget to talk because it’s enough just to hear water hitting rock over and over. Later in Pingxi we wrote our wishes on a sky lantern (Li laughed when I tried to write mine in Mandarin — probably butchered it), then watched it float up with dozens of others until they looked like tiny stars. That part stuck with me more than I expected.
