The experience

Your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel, B&B or train station in Hualien City and takes you south along the coast. The route opens at Baqi Observation Deck, where the road curves through hairpin bends and the scenery shifts suddenly from forested mountains to the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Range. From there you move through Dashibishan Trail (a 15-minute walk to an ocean overlook with a wooden trestle framing the horizon), and then to Shihmen Recreation Area, where a car-shaped cave sits in hard sedimentary rock carved by thousands of years of waves. The geological formations here are the draw: wave-cut platforms, uplifted coral reefs, cliffs and potholes that hold tropical fish and other marine life visible at low tide.

Shitiping, one of the most famous stops on the East Coast, shows the same geology at a larger scale: sea terraces, coral reefs and tide pools where you can spot fish and sea creatures. After these coastal sites, the tour moves inland to Baibow Stream, a tributary downstream from a closed jade mine. This is where you hunt for jade stones washed ashore by the river. You walk down to the streambed, search for pieces, and can bring them to a nearby factory to polish them yourself: a way to make a souvenir from the trip. The day ends at Liyu Lake, the largest lake in eastern Taiwan, where you can walk the lakeshore before your guide returns you to your starting point in Hualien City.

The tour runs eight hours and covers the private vehicle, fuel, entrance fees to all sites, bottled water and the guide's commentary in English. Lunch is not included, though the operator will recommend a restaurant. Gratuity is optional. The pace is built for families and nature lovers with no rush. The operator suggests staying in Hualien for a few days rather than squeezing this into a single afternoon.
