The experience
You download the Explorial app before you arrive, enter a six-digit game code when you're ready to start, and the riddles begin at Landsgemeindeplatz by the lake. The app marks locations on a map and feeds you puzzles tied to each one: no guide waiting, no set departure time, just you and the city. The Zytturm rises first, its blue-and-white tiled roof and painted clock face marking the old town gate. The riddles climb through its 52 metres of history. Then the Unter Altstadt unfolds, a double row of step-gabled houses that once stood at the water's edge until part of the town famously slid into the lake. At the Kolinbrunnen, you find the armoured figure of Wolfgang Kolin holding his banner high, a local hero whose battle Zug never forgot.
The whole loop takes around two hours if you walk straight through, but you control the pace entirely: stop for coffee, linger at a view, take breaks whenever you want. The app keeps score as you solve riddles and complete photo tasks, and you can compete against your group or chase the city's high score on the leaderboard. Because there's no guide and no fixed route, you're free to skip a stop or circle back if you miss something. Sunset at Zug is legendary, and the timing is yours to chase it.
You'll need a smartphone with a full charge and an active mobile data connection. The app works on iOS and Android. Entrance fees aren't required: all the puzzles relate to public areas and outdoor landmarks. The game is available in 24 languages, so you pick yours when you open the app. If weather or illness forces you to reschedule, you can move the tour to another day or swap it for a different city without penalty.
