The experience

The tour starts at Lake Thun, where you pass the shoreline and its villages backed by mountain ridges: long enough to stop for photographs, and the guide can reroute to castles around the lake if that appeals to you. From there, the route climbs into the Bernese Oberland toward Blausee, a small glacial lake ringed by forest, where the water sits so clear and so intensely blue that it looks artificial. A short hike brings you down to the shore. If you want to stay longer, a rowboat ride crosses the lake at a drift.

The final leg takes the cable car up the mountainside to the trailhead for Oeschinensee, a larger glacial lake set even higher. A hike through alpine meadow and stone reaches the water, where you can walk the shoreline or rent a rowboat and drift across it. The whole day runs ten hours door to door, with the unaccounted time spent driving between the three lakes and back to your hotel. The vehicle is air-conditioned and carries WiFi. Stops for lunch are your choice at local restaurants along the way.
