The experience

If you've just arrived in the region or have a free afternoon, this tour skips the rigid schedule of group buses. A driver-guide picks you up from your hotel (or Zurich Airport on request) and takes you through the Bernese Oberland in a private vehicle, stopping where the light is good or where you want to linger. The itinerary moves through five distinct landscapes: the Aare Gorge with its dramatic rock walls and turquoise water; Grindelwald, the alpine town ringed by peaks where you get free time to walk, photograph or sit with coffee; Lauterbrunnen Valley with its waterfalls and cliffs; Lake Brienz's peaceful shores; and a quiet lakeside village away from the main crowds. Aare Gorge entry is included for up to two people. Additional guests purchase their own tickets at the site.

The day runs eight to nine hours, but the pace is yours. Bottled water is provided, and the route itself is designed to show you the viewpoints locals know. An optional cable car ride to Sulwald is available depending on weather and what you want to do. Because it's private, you're not waiting for other groups or rushing between stops.
